Like the other volumes in the acclaimed Director’s Series (featuring the work of Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry), The Work of Director Chris Cunningham offers a feast of visual ingenuity, with one major difference: Unlike the relatively playful brightness of Jonze and Gondry, Cunningham wants to involve you in his nightmares. From the urban monstrosities of Aphex Twin’s “Come to Daddy” to the limb-shattering weirdness of Leftfield’s “Afrika Shox,” Cunningham’s music videos emphasize the freakish and the bizarre, but they are also arrestingly beautiful and otherworldly, as in the aquatic effects used for Portishead’s “Only You,” combining underwater movements with ominous urban landscapes. Some of Cunningham’s shock effects are horrifically effective (his ‘flex” video installation, excerpted here with music by Aphex Twin, is as disturbing as anything conjured by David Cronenberg), while others are cathartic or, in the case of Aphex Twin’s “Windowlicker,” outrageously amusing. And while the eerie elegance of Madonna’s “Frozen” arose from a chaotic production, the signature work in this collection is clearly Björk’s “All Is Full of Love,” a masterfully simple yet breathtaking vision of intimacy involving advanced robotics and seamless CGI composites. In these and other videos, Cunningham advances a unique aesthetic, infusing each video and commercial he makes with a dark, occasionally gothic sensibility. That these frequently nightmarish visions are also infectiously hypnotic is a tribute to Cunningham’s striking originality. –Jeff Shannon

Wandering the countryside with death never far behind, Ogami rescues a prostitute and offers to be punished in her place (which means being beaten to within an inch of his life). Impressed by his fortitude, a Chamberlain hires Ogami to assassinate a ruthless Governor, only to find out that the same Governor wants Ogami for a mission of his own.

When Ogami refuses the Governor’s offer, he must face a series of assassins, including a dangerous gunslinger, a master swordsman and an army of soldiers. And to make matters worse, a former samurai keeps politely asking if they can have a duel!

To ensure that not a single drop of blood was omitted, this special collector’s edition was created using a new digital transfer of the original Japanese film.

Ok, let’s look at Crucible Of Terror.

First, the movie is about Reclusive artist Victor Clare’s bronze female sculptures look so lifelike that they seem eerily… human! In the tradition of Vincent Price’s “House of Wax,” “Crucible of Terror” is the tale of an occult-dabbling sculptor possessed by a dead woman’s ghost. Under her spell, he lures young, beautiful models to his remote studio where he carries out his horrific secret method for obtaining such realism–pouring hot wax over the living girls, molding them to his liking with plaster and, finally, imprisoning them forever in hot molten bronze! A chilling, atmospheric thriller with a twist ending..

I really enjoyed the performace of Mary Maude and Mary Maude. The rest of the cast was solid as well. The cast includes Mike Raven, Mary Maude, James Bolam, Ronald Lacey, Betty Alberge.

Check out the trailer:

So what’s Homegrown all about?

Released to only a handful of theaters in the spring and summer of 1998, Homegrown was neglected by nervous distributors who couldn’t figure out how to market a movie about marijuana farmers. As a result, hardly anyone saw this cleverly plotted comedy-thriller about three experienced pot growers in northern California (Billy Bob Thornton, Hank Azaria, and Ryan Phillippe) who guard their valuable outdoor crop against raids by the cops and unwanted competitors. When their mysterious leader is apparently murdered, Thornton assumes the dead man’s identity to arrange one last, lucrative bumper-crop deal, but pulling off the scam proves to be a lot harder than they’d anticipated. While the three potheads seek refuge with an old colleague (Kelly Lynch) and routinely sample their goods (which explains the film’s theatrical obscurity), Homegrown turns into a taut thriller fueled by equal parts comedy and paranoid tension–an update of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre with marijuana instead of gold! Featuring cameo roles for Jamie Lee Curtis, Ted Danson, and John Lithgow, this entertaining film fell victim to the misguided fear that it promotes drugs and illegal activity. If anything, it promotes interesting characters, catchy dialogue, and a welcomed alternative to mainstream Hollywood comedies. –Jeff Shannon

Personally, I thought John Lithgow was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Jon Tenney.

All In the Family: The Complete Third Season was an incredible movie! Both Vincent Gardenia and Brendon T. Dillon were amazing!

The great cast includes Vincent Gardenia, Brendon T. Dillon, Bill Quinn.

If you love watching Vincent Gardenia or Brendon T. Dillon, you are definitely going to want to watch All In the Family: The Complete Third Season

The enduring appeal of one of television’s best and most controversial programs comes through loud (literally) and clear on All in the Family: The Complete Third Season, some 10 hours of compelling, entertaining viewing that serve as a timely reminder that even as TV in the new millennium has seemingly become more diverse and inclusive, with its many gay-themed shows and, gasp, proliferation of all manner of minorities, it has lost the kind of bite that the beloved (well, by some folks, anyway) bigot Archie Bunker used to bring to the small screen.

All 24 episodes (there is no bonus material or extra features) from the ‘72-’73 season of executive producer Norman Lear’s sitcom are contained here, and those unfamiliar with the show may well find them a bit startling. The language is part of it; Archie’s frequent use of terms like “gook” and “fag” would never pass muster in these politically correct times. Yet even more striking is All in the Family’s subject matter. Again and again, serious themes like politics (the ‘72 presidential race, pitting Richard Nixon against George McGovern, is mentioned frequently), racism (”Archie in the Hospital” is just one episode dealing with that issue), the death penalty and violence in the name of religion (”Archie Is Branded”), sexual assault (”Gloria, the Victim”), and gun control (”Archie and the Editorial”) are handled with remarkable frankness. At the center of it all, of course, is Carroll O’Connor’s Archie, who remains belligerent, boorish, and downright mean to the bitter end. Whether he’s bribing an IRS agent, cheating an insurance company, or just being pig-headed in general, Archie is utterly unrepentant; basically, he never does the right thing, a trait that’s somehow both irritating and refreshing.

All in the Family is hardly perfect; the dysfunctional family’s ceaseless squabbling and shouting–usually involving Archie and liberal son-in-law Mike Stivic (Rob Reiner), although wife Edith (the brilliant Jean Stapleton) and daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers) aren’t immune–eventually becomes tiresome and shrill. But for the most part, the show’s acting, writing (which manages to be very funny as well as incisive), and point of view make this set a must-have. –Sam Graham

So what’s No Country for Old Men all about?

The Coen brothers make their finest thriller since Fargo with a restrained adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel. Not that there aren’t moments of intense violence, but No Country for Old Men is their quietest, most existential film yet. In this modern-day Western, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is a Vietnam vet who could use a break. One morning while hunting antelope, he spies several trucks surrounded by dead bodies (both human and canine). In examining the site, he finds a case filled with $2 million. Moss takes it with him, tells his wife (Kelly Macdonald) he’s going away for awhile, and hits the road until he can determine his next move. On the way from El Paso to Mexico, he discovers he’s being followed by ex-special ops agent Chigurh (an eerily calm Javier Bardem). Chigurh’s weapon of choice is a cattle gun, and he uses it on everyone who gets in his way–or loses a coin toss (as far as he’s concerned, bad luck is grounds for death). Just as Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), a World War II vet, is on Moss’s trail, Chigurh’s former colleague, Wells (Woody Harrelson), is on his. For most of the movie, Moss remains one step ahead of his nemesis. Both men are clever and resourceful–except Moss has a conscious, Chigurh does not (he is, as McCarthy puts it, “a prophet of destruction”). At times, the film plays like an old horror movie, with Chigurh as its lumbering Frankenstein monster. Like the taciturn terminator, No Country for Old Men doesn’t move quickly, but the tension never dissipates. This minimalist masterwork represents Joel and Ethan Coen and their entire cast, particularly Brolin and Jones, at the peak of their powers. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Personally, I thought Javier Bardem was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Rodger Boyce.
